The Economy and Society
We are living through a Great Depression. What can be done to create jobs, to provide living wages, and to provide housing and education for all? We must put working people, including the unemployed and those who can’t fend for themselves first.
Workers and the Labor Movement
Most people work for a living and workers’ rights and labor unions must be defended and strengthened, but at the same time, the labor unions must be transformed if they are to be able to fight the corporations and improve workers’ lives.
Rights for All
We must continue to fight to defend the civil rights of all Americans. Many Americans still suffer from discrimination, racism, racial profiling and sometimes hate crimes. We must fight for the rights of African Americans, Latinos, Asians, Arabs, Jews, women and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. We must end discrimination and oppression of anyone because of their race, religion, national origin, language, color, gender, or sexual preference.
The Environment
The environmental crisis that threatens our planet can only be stopped by dramatically reducing the use of petroleum and coal. Nor is nuclear power the answer.
Foreign Policy and War
The United States, at the behest of the banks and corporations, pursues an imperial policy intended to win control of natural resources such as oil, to dominate markets and to exploit labor. We must end America’s imperial policies and stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan at cone.
Organizing for Change
If we hope to change America’s domestic and foreign policies, we will need to build powerful labor and social movements. We will also need to create a political party which is the expression of those movements.
Capitalism and Socialism
Today we are trapped in the capitalist system with its booms and busts, its recessions and depressions. We need to construct an alternative. That alternative is democratic socialism, a society where people control the political and economic systems for the good of all.
